2019 Fall Hammer-In with Ellen Durkan and Tom Willoughby

Price: $150 per class day

North Texas Blacksmith Association is pround to host Ellen Durkan and Tom Willoughby for the 2019 Fall Hammer-In. Classes will take place in the 2nd week of November at Brookhaven Community College in Farmers Branch on Wednesday (Nov. 6th), Thursday (Nov. 7th), and Friday (Nov. 8th). Each class will have 8-10 limited slots available. Since availability is limited, it will be a "First-Come, First Serve" basis with paid registration thru PayPal. If you cannot register thru PayPal, please contact us. NTxBA membership is required to participate in the class. For new and renewing members, please add "Membership" to your cart as well. It can be found towards the bottom of the page.

If someone under the age of 18 wishes to participate in a class, a parent or guardian must be present to supervise and also be a member of the NTxBA (for insurance reasons). If you are not yet a member, you can sign-up & pay on the day of the class or here thru PayPal. You can add extra membership at the bottom of the page.

Ellen Durkan

Ellen Durkan of Iron Maiden Forge is a talented artist. She has a Masters Degree in Fine Arts, Sculpture from the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington DC. The is currently a professor at Delaware College of Art and Design where she previous earned her Bachelors in Fine Art. She is well known for her wearable fashion made from steel, copper and leather. Ellen will also be demonstrating in the ABANA 2020 Conference in New York.


Ellen will be teaching a 3-day course of classes which revolve around the idea of starting with a design idea and the process towards making a final product. Each class day may be taken individually, but it is recommended to take all three classes to get the most benefit. Please see below for more details regarding each class.

Tom Willoughby

Tom Willoughby of Willoughby Forge and Anvil shop in Crowne Point is a well known blacksmith from the farrier community. He believes that horseshoeing and blacksmithing go hand in hand. He is well known for his skills in scultping wood and steel into works of art. He has over 34 years of farrier and blacksmithing experience. Tom is also famous for his anvil vultures which sit at the anvil and watch him work.
Tom will be teaching 3 different classes. Each class will be independent of each other and each will cover a different topic. Please see below for more details regarding each class.

Wednesday, November 6th, 2018 from 9am - 5pm

1 Day Class - $150

Day 1 of Ellen Durkan's "Design & Make a finished product". In the first day, you will learn design principles and processes that go towards making your desired product.

Thursday, November 7th, 2018 from 9am - 5pm

1 Day Class - $150

Day 2 of Ellen Durkan's "Design & Make a finished product". In the second day, you will begin construction of your product and make any needed revisions.

Friday, November 8th, 2019 from 9am - 5pm

1 Day Class - $150

Day 3 of Ellen Durkan's "Design & Make a finished product". On this third day, you will finish and complete any revisions to your product.

Tom Willoughby Classes

Wednesday, November 6th, 2018 from 9am - 5pm

1 Day Class - $150

In this class, Tom will be going over how to make various tongs. 2 tong blanks will be provided. Additional blanks will be available for purchase.

Thursday, November 7th, 2018 from 9am - 5pm

1 Day Class - $150

In this class, Tom will be going over how to make a blade from a farrier's rasp.
Please add each day you wish to attend to the cart when checking out.


Friday, November 8th, 2019 from 9am - 5pm

1 Day Class - $150

In this class, Tom will be going over how to make a humming burd or vulture.

Fall Hammer-In Conference & Auction

Saturday, November 9th, 2019 from 9am-5pm

Price - $45

This conference will feature Ellen Durkan and Tom Willoughby as our demonstrator.

All items that he makes will be in the auction following the conference. Please feel free to bring anything you've made to donate to the auction. All proceeds will benefit the club and help fund other events such as this.
> If time permits, there may be open-forging available after the auction.
The cost to attend the conference will be $45. As a bonus for non-NTxBA Members, paid attendance will automatically give you 12-months of membership to the club. New members, please leave your name, email, address, and a phone number in the "instructions for merchant" box when you check out.
